Secret Service officers shot a man on Monday following an exchange of gunfire near the White House that also injured a juvenile bystander.

In a press conference, Secret Service deputy director Matthew Quinn said that around 3:30 p.m., plainclothes agents patrolling around the White House complex spotted the suspect, who appeared to have a weapon on him.

Those agents contacted uniformed ones, who tried to approach the alleged gunman. But Quinn said that the man tried to flee and opened fire at the agents, who returned fire.

The man was hit in the exchange and was transported to a hospital. His condition was unknown as of early Tuesday. Also hit in the exchange was a bystander, a minor whom Quinn said did not sustain life-threatening injuries but is receiving treatment.

Quinn said the Washington, D.C., police would investigate this shooting.

Monday’s shooting comes just over a week after a suspect opened fire at the venue of the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, and other high-ranking Administration officials attended. A Secret Service agent was shot in that shooting at the Washington Hilton Hotel, and the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, has been charged with attempting to assassinate the President, among other charges.

Quinn said the Vice President’s motorcade passed through the area not long before the shooting on Monday. Trump was hosting a business event in the White House at the time, and the White House was briefly locked down. The Secret Service temporarily encouraged people to avoid the area as emergency crews responded to the shooting.

Asked whether the shooting was believed to be “related potentially to the other recent attempts on Trump’s life,” Quinn said, “I can’t say. I’m not going to guess on that … but we will find out.“
