CNN’s Jake Tapper was bewildered by why Trump and MAGA allies find jokes about violence funny but are quick to denounce late-night comedians.
During Tuesday’s episode of “The Lead,” the host responded to Trump’s attack on late-night host Jimmy Kimmel for jokes involving Melania Trump, which has since led the FCC to start an early review of ABC’s broadcasting license.
He aired a clip of Kimmel defending himself, saying, “I also should point out Donald Trump is allowed to say whatever he wants to say, as are you and as am I, as are all of us, because under the First Amendment we have, as Americans, a right to free speech.”
However, Tapper noted that “the Trump administration sometimes seem a bit selective in what they consider beyond the pale.” He pointed to jokes that came up after Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul, was attacked with a hammer by a home invader in 2022.
A clip showed Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy saying, “Paul Pelosi needs the hammer instead the metal” and then-anchor Pete Hegseth, now the defense secretary, responding, “It’s metal all right.” That followed a clip of Trump making a speech where he said, “Who will stand up to crazy Nancy Pelosi, who ruined San Francisco? How’s her husband doing, by the way? Anybody know?”
Tapper then resurfaced an Instagram post by Donald Trump Jr. that pictured under and a hammer and had the caption, “Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready.”
“Why is that funny?” Tapper said. “Her husband was hit in the head with a hammer, and he’s still injured. Why does anybody think that’s funny?”
He added that “Republican officials and pundits have also taken issue with people calling Trump fascist or a tyrant, saying that that sort of rhetoric leads others to commit acts of violence.”
