Supermarket staple Pathmark returns to Long Island with new streamlined concept

An iconic northeastern grocery store is heading back to Long Island — with a new twist for shoppers — after the once beloved chain filed for bankruptcy more than a decade ago.

Pathmark is set to open its new concept store, “Pathmark Daily,” in East Meadow on Friday, offering Nassau County shoppers a more streamlined grocery shopping experience, according to Greater Long Island.

Allegiance Retail Services, which acquired Pathmark in 2016 after parent company A&P filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2015, said the new store will emphasize high-quality produce, meats, seafood and everyday essentials for shoppers on the go.

“Pathmark Daily answers the need of consumers who want a fast, hassle-free shopping experience emphasizing strong value and quality,” President of Allegiance Retail Services Joseph Fantozzi told Newsday on Monday.

The new store will also carry Best Yet, a private label brand, along with a loyalty rewards program.

“Our customers rely on Pathmark for savings and Pathmark Daily will continue that promise by offering Best Yet products, weekly promotions, and a meaningful rewards program, with neighborhoods in mind,” Fantozzi said.

The East Meadow location spans 28,000 square feet across two floors, with a 15,000-square-foot main shopping level and a basement for storage.

Pathmark Daily will be operated by Staten Island resident Mike Said, who opened a Super Foodtown location at the location in 2023, Newsday reported. Super Foodtown is also owned by Allegiance Retail Services.

Pathmark Daily will offer Nassau County shoppers a more streamlined grocery shopping experience. MMR

A&P acquired Pathmark in 2007 in a nearly $680 million deal that brought 141 locations across New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania under its umbrella, according to The New York Times.

The company, which was formed in 1859 as The Great American Tea Co. and rebranded to A&P in 1869, also owned Best Cellars, Food Basics, The Food Emporium, Superfresh and Waldbaums when it went out of business in 2015.

Allegiance Retail Services purchased the Pathmark banner following A&P’s bankruptcy in 2015 and brought the brand back to life in 2019, reopening the brand at a Brooklyn location that had previously housed one of the original Pathmark stores, according to a press release.

This marks the first expansion of the Pathmark brand under Allegiance Retail Services’ ownership.
