Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth fired Army Chief of Staff General Randy George on April 2 with a terse phone call lasting less than a minute, providing no explanation or advance notice.
George received the call during a Pentagon meeting while Army Secretary Dan Driscoll was on vacation in North Carolina.
According to The Daily Beast, Hegseth’s dismissal was motivated by paranoia, described by George as “disloyal.”
The abrupt firing drew criticism within the Pentagon and Trump administration circles, particularly given the ongoing U.S. and Israel war against Iran.
White House officials stated Hegseth retains presidential confidence. But The Wall Street Journal reported the unusually public feud has raised questions about whether personal vendettas influence his decisions during a time of unprecedented military commitments worldwide.
