Hello Games has revealed details about the latest update coming to the already massive No Man’s Sky. Called Relics, Update 5.6 adds prehistoric scenery and the profession of paleontology to its massive universe, affording players the chance to dig up the bones of ancient beings. The update also includes a community expedition for players to compete for the rarest finds. The Relics update rolls out for PC, console and VR today and is free for existing players.
According to the studio, it attempted to imitate earthly paleontology in the sense that players who dig up fossils will have to piece together the skeletons of creatures from context — or ignore context entirely. They can put together museums of their finds and share them with other players. Players can also barter with an in-universe specialist for rarer fossils. There are several other fossil-related updates within Relics, including the ability to make food from bones.
Because this is No Man’s Sky, the fossils do not always stay in ground, and on some planets players can find the skeletal creatures have arisen and are roaming around. Some fossils are guarded by stone golem guardians, who must be fought before any digging can begin. Relics also refines the game’s Abandoned Mode, alongside several other fixes unrelated to the actual relics.
No Man’s Sky’s most recent addition previously was the Worlds II update that rolled out in January. That update added billions of new solar systems and new biomes to the universe. Hello Games said in a statement of Relics’ smaller size: “However, sometimes we really want to introduce something new and focused. An example last year was ‘fishing’, which continues to be very popular with our players. These are features we feel make the universe feel broader and more real. Similarly for absolutely ages we’ve wanted to introduce ‘palaeontology’.”
