The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for dozens of Texas counties, with a storm expected to bring bitter cold and the possibility of snow to parts of the U.S. South.

Texas’ Jefferson and Orange counties are also under a blizzard warning.

Why It Matters

Winter storms can trigger power outages, and snow can disrupt travel and lead to hazardous driving conditions.

Additionally, freezing temperatures may present health risks, especially for vulnerable groups—including infants and older adults.

What To Know

As of early Tuesday, the NWS had blizzard warnings in place for Jefferson and Orange Counties. Swaths of Texas’ South and Southeastern areas were also under winter storm warnings.

Blizzard conditions and additional snow accumulations between 2 to 4 inches were expected.

The service warned that visibilities could drop below a quarter mile because of falling and blowing snow. Residents should plan on slippery conditions, and Tuesday commutes could be affected, it added.

The NWS said a blizzard warning indicated that severe winter weather conditions were expected or already happening. Strong winds combined with falling and blowing snow are likely to create whiteout conditions, making travel extremely hazardous. It advised those in affected areas to avoid traveling.

What People Are Saying

AccuWeather Meteorologist Bill Deger told Newsweek: “While parts of central Texas west to the Interstate 35 corridor around San Antonio and Austin have seen snow falling over the last 12 or so hours, the most significant accumulation is expected in southeastern and east-central Texas into Tuesday afternoon.

“This specifically includes the Interstate 10 corridor from Houston east to the Louisiana border, where 3-6 inches of snow is forecast by AccuWeather. Some of the counties expected to experience the heaviest snow in this area include Chambers, Galveston, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Montgomery, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto and Tyler Counties.”

Online weather analyst Ryan Hall wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “Blizzard Warning issued for Southeast Texas & Southwest Louisiana until noon today. 2-4 [inches of] snow expected with 35mph winds creating dangerous whiteout conditions. Travel for emergencies only.”

NWS Houston said on X: “Sleet & snow showers have developed across the area. Temperatures are also quickly falling below freezing with temperatures as low as 25°F north of the Houston Metro. Roads will become dangerous as the temperatures fall, so please don’t be on the roads unless you have to.”

What Happens Next

The NWS’ blizzard warning is scheduled to be in effect until noon Tuesday. The agency previously said hazardous cold weather was expected to persist along the Gulf Coast and across the Southeast U.S. for most of the week.
