Last month, the world learned that in her new book, No Going Back, Kristi Noem details her decision to shoot and kill her family’s 14-month-old dog, Cricket. But as it turns out, that’s not the only dog-killing incident she writes of in the book. In addition to describing Cricket’s gruesome murder, the South Dakota governor also openly fantasizes about killing Joe Biden’s dog.
That’s right: CNN reports that in a truly bizarre passage in which she asks, “What would I do if I was president on the first day in office in 2025?,” Noem answers herself by saying, “Thanks for asking. I happen to have a list. The first thing I’d do is make sure Joe Biden’s dog was nowhere on the grounds (‘Commander, say hello to Cricket for me’). But my dog, Foster, would sure be welcome. He comes with me to the capitol all the time and loves everyone.”
So for one thing, it’s pretty odd that Noem, who in no universe is going to be president in 2025, is outlining her day one priorities for that job. But it’s obviously even more odd—and non-dog-killers might even say extremely fucked up!—that she’s talking about killing Biden’s dog. (Sure, she speaks euphemistically here, but the clear point is that Commander is going to the same place that Cricket is.) Commander, the Bidens’ German shepherd, was removed from the White House last year after a number of biting incidents involving Secret Service agents. But according to Noem, it was not enough for him to be removed, and he should apparently be shot—possibly in a gravel pit, as Cricket was.
Appearing on Face the Nation on Sunday, Noem doubled down on the dog-slaying plans, telling Margaret Brennan she would not be “retracting anything.”
