Even royals get nostalgic sometimes.
King Charles III shared a video to social media Monday, looking back in honor of the first anniversary of his coronation.
Though Charles officially became king when his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in September 2022 after a 70-year reign on the throne, the longest in history, his May 2023 coronation was the definition of pomp and circumstance, encompassing a full weekend’s slate of events. The highlight, of course, was the official crowning of Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla.
The posted highlight reel is a minute and a half long, and shows not only Charles and Camilla’s big moments at Westminster Abbey, but also celebrates the teeming crowds of spectators gathered to witness the historic moment, the extended royal family including Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their children, the newly promoted Wales family and next in line for the throne, and the concerts, community service events, and general revelry of the occasion.

“As well as the service itself, the Coronation Weekend saw a carriage procession through central London, a fly-past, a Royal Salute by 4,000 troops in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, a Coronation Concert at Windsor Castle and a UK-wide volunteering initiative,” the caption on the video read in part. “What’s your favourite memory of the weekend?”
Plenty has happened in the year since the happy coronation festivities, the most notable being the serious health turmoil amongst several senior royals, Charles included. Both Charles and Kate shared in recent months that they had each been diagnosed with and were being treated for cancer, as well as Sarah Ferguson’s revelation that she had been diagnosed with skin cancer, less than a year after receiving treatment for breast cancer.
Charles, as of last week, has returned to a more limited schedule of public-facing duties while he continues to receive treatment, while Kate has stepped back.
Buckingham Palace shared another video on Monday, set to British Poet Laureate Simon Armitage’s coronation poem “An Unexpected Guest,” which imagines a spectator’s experience of the festivities.
