If you want to hear some strong opinions, just ask a fashion enthusiast what they think of Kim Kardashian and the Met Gala. Doesn’t matter what year, but if you really want to go for it, invoke 2022 and Marilyn Monroe’s naked dress and watch the fireworks fly.
And now, the divisive 43-year-old reality star/shapewear mogul/mom of four has arrived at the Met Gala 2024 clad in another attention-grabbing look, just in case the dinner conversation needed a bit of livening up.
Kardashian wore Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano, a look brimming with details nodding to the Sleeping Beauty fairytale: She wrapped a thistle-washed cashmere cardigan around her shoulders, and a corset rewoven from antique silver brocade compressed her waist. The gown’s overskirt was made of tooled silver metal and its intricate details made a tangle of lace, flowers, and leaves. Take a close look and spot the mirror fragments, silver chain, crystal pendants, and pearls that made up the skirt’s fairytale floral motifs.
Kardashian’s gown was jewelry enough, and she kept her other hardware minimal. Her long platinum hair was bound into a loose romantic braid down her back.
Kardashian has been generating spirited discussion ever since her very first Met Gala appearance in 2013, when she attended with then-partner Kanye West, pregnant with their first child, North West, wearing a jersey floral custom Givenchy gown complete with turtleneck, long sleeves, and perfectly matched gloves and shoes of the same print. She was instantly memed in online reactions and admitted to Vogue in an interview years later that “I was crying, like, the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it. There were all these memes about me and this couch.”
With the distance of time, however, “Now I love it, now it’s sick,” she said.
With the exception of the 2020 Met Gala, which was canceled in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kardashian has been a consistent guest at the gala since that first year, donning memorable looks like the Thierry Mugler “wet dress” in 2019, a getup that felt almost anatomically impossible, and her all-black 2021 Balenciaga T-shirt dress, which shrouded her head to toe—including her face.
When it comes to controversial Met Gala looks, it’s hard to keep up with Kardashian.
