A dog owner has shared with Newsweek the heart-melting reaction her dog has when she arrives home, whether she’s been away for minutes or hours.
In adorable footage, the two-year-old Kelpie, Cattle Dog and Husky mix Max is peacefully dozing on the bed when the unmistakable sound of his owner’s arrival catches his attention. Instantly, his tail springs into action, wagging furiously.
As owner Sarah enters the room, Max’s excitement reaches its peak and he rushes to greet her. In the video with over 1 million views, the text overlay reads: “This is a reminder that no matter how tired you are, your dog waited all day to spend time with you.”
Sarah told Newsweek: “He always reacts this way when I get home, regardless of whether it’s 3 minutes or 3 hours! He has separation anxiety, so he gets very excited when we come home.”
The video delighted the internet, prompting fellow animal lovers to share their joy at Max’s excitement.
“Animals are proof that true love is in actions and not words,” said Bella.
While Sky said: “No matter how long my work day is I always stay up to spend time with my dogs.”
Sarah decided to post the footage to highlight the special friendship she shares with Max, and the delight that dogs bring into the lives of their owners: “I was inspired to share the video to show the beautiful bond we share, and just how nice it is to come home to a pet who is so excited to see you,” she said.
Dogs perceive time differently from humans and can sense the passage of time, even if they don’t understand exact hours and minutes. This is because of their episodic memories that mean they can remember specific events, like their owner leaving the house, but cannot understand the passage of time in the same way we do.
Dr. Sam Meisler, veterinarian, CEO, and founder of PetWellClinic, previously told Newsweek: “If your dog is excited to see you, sticks by your side when at home, and displays affectionate behavior toward you, such as leaning against you, and seeking your attention, you have a special place in your dog’s heart.”
Sarah was thrilled with how many people enjoyed seeing her and Max reunited: “I was so happy to see so many dog and animal lovers moved by the video, and I was surprised by the emotion it brought up for many of them,” she said.
