The White House Correspondents’ Dinner delivered when it came to glitz and glamour on Saturday, with a red carpet lineup that included a diverse lineup of journalists, political figures, and celebrities. Looking for a legendary superhero? Here’s Wonder Woman‘s Lynda Carter. How about a pair of 1980s icons? There’s Molly Ringwald and her Pretty In Pink co-star, Andrew McCarthy.
Oh, and President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were there, too.
The annual event is intended to provide a humorous break from the daily cutthroat grind of political reporting and to celebrate the joys of a free press. This year, the confluence of journalism and celebrity also attracted protesters against the war between Israel and Hamas.
“Shame on you,” some demonstrators cried as stars including Billy Porter, Chris Pine, and Scarlett Johansson entered the Washington Hilton Hotel. “Western media we see you, and all the horrors that you hide,” CBS quotes the protesters as chanting.
Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell were also there, perhaps a reminder that season 2 of The Diplomat is on the way. So were Jon Hamm—who has lent his voice to efforts to unseat Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley—and Sean Penn, who once characterized a mugshot of presidential candidate Donald Trump as “Angry used car salesman. Failed magician in Vegas.”
But while Hamm and Penn eschewed the red carpet, many others stopped to pose, including Rosario Dawson, Fran Drescher, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Rachel Brosnahan, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
