German authorities on Thursday said they had detained two German-Russian nationals suspected of plotting sabotage attacks in complicity with Moscow.
The alleged plotting, whose targets included U.S. military sites in Germany, was “intended to undermine the German military support to Ukraine in its war against Russia,” the German federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
The two suspects, identified only as Dieter S. and Alexander J., were arrested on Wednesday in the Bavarian city of Bayreuth, it said.
Dieter S. prepared to commit explosive and arson attacks, especially on military infrastructure and industrial sites in Germany, including on facilities of the U.S. forces. This suspect was in contact with a person who is connected to the Russian secret service, according to the statement.
“To prepare, Dieter S. collected information about potential targets, including facilities of the U.S. armed forces,” the prosecutor’s office said. Alexander J. helped in these preparations, it said.
Dieter S. was active in eastern Ukraine as a fighter for an armed unit of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic between December 2014 and September 2016, according to the prosecutor’s office. The unit is now classified as a terrorist organization by the German judiciary, so Dieter S. is also accused of membership in a foreign terrorist organization abroad.
