US planning new sanctions as part of ‘comprehensive response’ to Iran’s attacks on Israel
The is preparing fresh sanctions against following its “unprecedented” attack on at the weekend, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed in Washington on Tuesday night.
In a statement, Sullivan said that was “coordinating with allies and partners, including the , and with bipartisan leaders in Congress, on a comprehensive response” to what he called Iran’s “unprecedented air attack against Israel.”
The statement said the new sanctions will be imposed on Iran’s missile and drone programs as well as against “entities supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iran’s Defense Ministry.”
Sullivan added: “We continue to work through the Department of Defense and US Central Command to further strengthen and expand the successful integration of air and missile defense and early warning systems across the Middle East to further erode the effectiveness of Iran’s missile and UAV [unmanned aerial vehicle] capabilities.”
He said the US also expected its allies and partners to follow with their own sanctions. The European Union’s foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Tuesday evening that Brussels was also working on expanding sanctions against Iran.
, most of which were shot down by Israeli air defenses with support from coalition forces led by the United States. Tehran said the attack was retaliation for an , in which several senior IRGC officers were killed. Iran blames Israel for the strike.
Since the Iranian air attack, Israel has promised its own response, while its allies have urged restraint.
