On Monday evening, Blake Snell’s free agency is over and the San Francisco Giants have reportedly emerged victorious in the sweepstakes.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan’s post on X (formerly Twitter), Snell and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a two-year, $62 million contract that includes an opt-out after the first year.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post broke the new first but Passan added that Snell’s deal with the San Francisco Giants ends a free agency that stretched to nine days before Opening Day. He entered the winter hoping for a long-term deal, but the market at the price he sought never materialized, and he winds up in San Francisco.
Snell was highly sought after after winning his second career Cy Young Award with the San Diego Padres last season. His first came in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He had a National League-best 2.25 ERA and a 1.189 WHIP with 234 strikeouts in 180 innings pitched in 2023. His 5.9 hits allowed per nine innings was the best in the NL.
The Giants were patient with Snell throughout the offseason. Reports came out that he was being pursued seriously by the New York Yankees and Houston Astros and had some interest from the Los Angeles Angels. San Francisco has shied away from long-term deals with free-agent starters and due to this offseason’s market, a short-term deal was inevitable.
Adding Snell to a rotation that has Logan Webb and expects Alex Cobb back soon and another Cy Young Award winner in Robbie Ray back mid-season, the Giants have positioned themselves to compete in the NL West with what should be one of the league’s best rotations.
