A video of a dog longing for a bite of a croissant sandwich being eaten in front of it has gone viral on TikTok.
The clip was posted by @gonzales_fallon and has had 4 million views since it was first shared.
A caption alongside the post reads: “Pining for that breakfast sandwich #labrador #hungry #funnydog.”
The footage shows a person eating the sandwich on a couch next to a dog crate. A pup inside the crate can be seen staring at the food, while another dog standing in front of the person is also shown looking at the sandwich.
A voice heard as part of the background music of the clip says “Today I wanted to eat croissant, so I went to a place that sells croissants…”
The dog in the crate continues to stare at the sandwich in the person’s hand. With mouth open and tongue out, the canine appears to grimace at one point, with its teeth pushed up against the crate, before the video ends.
The dog’s reaction to the food in the viral clip could be down to genetics, according to a Cambridge University study in May 2016.
The study, published in Cell Metabolism, found that some Labradors have a mutation in their DNA that could predispose them to weight gain.
“There is some hard-wired biology behind that persistent food-seeking behavior,” The Guardian reported Eleanor Raffan, a co-author of the study, as saying at the time of the study’s release.
Among the dog breeds for which data was reported, Labrador retrievers were found to have “the greatest documented obesity prevalence and have been shown to be more food motivated than other breeds,” the research said.
The study explained that a deletion in the pro-opiomelanocortin gene was associated with increased body weight, adiposity (body fat) and food motivation in Labrador retrievers as well as the closely related flat-coat retrievers.
‘Ready To Eat the Cage’
Users on TikTok were in stitches over the dog’s reaction in the latest viral video, such as @_marnuel_ who said, “bros ready to eat the cage.”
Skmurdock wrote: “…it’s the desperate attempt to taste it through the air, for me.”
User @anitalabonita_ agreed, writing, “Literally gnawing through the bars of his enclosure.”
Ara Cho said: “Homie in the back was inhaling the air. Give that doggo a piece of that.”
Queen said the dog is “catching the air crumbs.”
Teenie Tini noted: “I’m guessing there’s a reason that one is crated when food is out.”
“I can only imagine that puppers is in the kennel because he or she has no self-control,” wrote jeanetteperez1113.
