Actor Colman Domingo, who plays Ali on Euphoria, has shared the reason why Season 3 of the hit HBO series has been delayed. The previous season of the show last aired in February 2022.
In a new interview, Domingo said that the show’s creator Sam Levinson has been adjusting the show (starring Zendaya) to reflect what’s going on in the real world.
“[Sam is] a person who writes and rewrites and writes and rewrites again, because I think he’s wrestling with what’s important,” Domingo told GQ. “He’s responding immediately to what the ills of the world are. I know that the one thing I can tell you is that he’s very much interested in the existential question of who we are right now. Our souls. That’s what he wants to figure out with season three.”
Domingo’s character Ali, who recurs on Euphoria, is a recovering drug addict who becomes a sponsor and mentor to Zendaya’s Rue. He took home an Emmy for “Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series” for his role in the series in 2022.
In an August 2023 interview with Elle, Levinson teased that Season 3 will be a “film noir” and Rue would “explore what it means to be an individual with principles in a corrupt world.”
The series, which is based on an Israeli show of the same name, centers on Rue and her teen friends, who live in the fictional town of East Highland, California. After a stint in rehab, Rue struggles to return to her “normal” life in her hometown.
Jacob Elordi, who also stars in the series, recently joked about the delay of the series and the actors aging out of their roles.
“I hope it’s soon, or they’re going to have to Benjamin Button me or something,” Elordi joked about the show’s delay on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon. “I’m going to have a bad back walking down the hallway, you know?”
