At least six people were killed when a gunman opened fire in the heart of Krakow, Poland, authorities said Saturday, and the bodies of three of the suspect’s relatives were later discovered at his home in another city.
The shooter drove onto Main Square in Krakow’s Old Town on Saturday afternoon and opened fire, police said on social media. He was shot by police and taken to a hospital.
Authorities have not named the suspect, a Polish national in his mid-20s. “Everything indicates that he was fascinated by far-right ideologies,” Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said at a news conference Saturday.
Four women and two men were killed, including a British national and three Polish citizens, Police Chief Marek Boron said told the news conference. The nationalities of the two remaining victims were not yet known.
Fifteen others were injured in the attack, including two police officers, he added. Authorities called Saturday for blood donations for one of the officers.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Saturday that the bodies of two women and one man were found at the suspect’s house in Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski, about 85 miles northeast of Krakow, after the attack.
Police said early Sunday that those victims had been identified as the suspect’s parents, 53 and 52, and his 21-year-old sister.
Krakow police spokesperson Katarzyna Cislo said the suspect was wearing military-style clothing and a bulletproof vest and used a military-style weapon, according to the Associated Press. Other weapons and ammunition were discovered in his vehicle, she added.
Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz denied reports that the man was a soldier.
Poland began two days of national mourning on Sunday.
“America stands with Poland at this dark hour as Poland stands with her beloved citizens of Krakow,” the U.S. ambassador to Poland, Tom Rose, wrote on X. “May the blessed memory of those lost today assuage the grief of those who mourn.”
Such attacks are rare in Poland, though a spate of school stabbings was reported last month, with one person killed and others injured, according to the AP.
