“America is back,” declared Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, on Tuesday night as Democrats were on the path to a resounding victory in the House. “Today begins the great American comeback.”
Mr. Jeffries, who is set to make history in January as the first Black speaker of the House, promised a room of ebullient supporters and volunteers in the nation’s capital that Democrats understood they had been given a mandate to deliver “dramatic change.”
His message to voters: “We hear you. We see you. We feel you. House Democrats are committed to making life better for you,” he said. “This is not a partisan moment. This is a patriotic one.”
Mr. Jeffries promised that House Democrats would work on two tracks: to make life more affordable for Americans and to bring accountability to the corruption that the Trump administration has visited upon the country.
“We’re going to fight for small-town America,” he said. “We’re going to fight for urban America. We’re going to fight for suburban America. We’re going fight for the heartland of America. We’re going to fight for Black and brown communities all across America.”
Mr. Jeffries, a reserved politician who grew up in a working-class home in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn in the 1980s, ended on a note of hometown pride.
“We made it, Brooklyn,” he said. “We made it.”
