A prank meant to humiliate a Red Baron worker backfired—now strangers have given the dad of 4 more than $760,000

The internet has a well-worn genre: Film a stranger at work, needle him until he snaps, post the meltdown for views. This time, the genre flipped.

A video of a prankster faking an Apple Pay theft from a Red Baron Pizza worker as he stocked a grocery store freezer has made the prankster an online pariah. It has also turned the worker, a Michigan father of four identified only as Walt Z., into the beneficiary of a GoFundMe campaign that had raised $761,514 as of publication. Among the donors: Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential candidate and GOP nominee for Ohio governor, who gave $38,000.

What happened in the video

The clip opens with the cameraman asking the worker, who is wearing a Red Baron shirt and loading frozen pizzas into a case, what time it is. When Walt pulls out his phone, the prankster holds up his own device, plays a sound mimicking an Apple Pay transaction, and claims he just took $10, NBC Chicago reported. No money actually changed hands.

“Listen dude, I’m not in the mood for this crap right now,” Walt says. “You think this is funny, don’t you?” He tells the prankster he’s going to report him and walks away. The footage then shows him speaking with what appear to be store employees.

When the cameraman approaches again, this time thanking him “for the $20,” Walt’s composure gives way.

“My life is hard enough as it is”

“It’s not a joke to me,” he says. “I don’t have time for this crap in my life. My life is hard enough as it is.” He explains that his kids went to bed without him, that he was supposed to be home an hour earlier, and that he has to be up at 5 a.m. to get to 10 more stores.

When the prankster apologizes, Walt rejects it, wearing a smug look. Then comes the line that has been quoted across the internet: “You’re probably making money off this! I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage! And I got four kids at home! So not funny!”

Walt also worries aloud that the confrontation could get him kicked out of the store. Instead, the person behind the camera is the one who disappeared: The Instagram account that posted the clip has since been deleted, and the video now lives on through reposts on X and Reddit.

Red Baron stands by its worker

Schwan’s Company, Red Baron’s parent, told the New York Post that the encounter actually took place in August, months before the video went viral, and that the company had “connected directly with our team member to check on his well-being, and we continue to offer our full support.”

On Oct. 29, the brand’s X account went a step further. “He’s still here. He’s got a fan club. Including us,” Red Baron posted, alongside a graphic declaring that employee-of-the-month nominations were closed. “You know why.”

A stranger started the fundraiser

The GoFundMe, titled “Support a Harassed Red Baron Worker,” was launched Oct. 27 by Luke Oakenshield, who had never met Walt and set out to track him down. The campaign had raised about $5,500 by the next day. It crossed $100,000 a day after that, then $500,000 by Oct. 30, as conservative commentators including Benny Johnson and Collin Rugg amplified it.

As donations poured in, supporters learned that Oakenshield, a military veteran, says he is homeless and living out of his car. A friend has since launched a separate fundraiser for him. “I started all of this because I know struggle, and never thought it would explode like it did,” Oakenshield wrote. He has said GoFundMe is overseeing the campaign so the money goes directly to Walt. The displayed total reflects pledges, not confirmed payments.

Striking a nerve

The outpouring says as much about the economy as about prank culture. Walt is a full-time worker, still on the clock near midnight, who says he can’t cover his mortgage. Millions of Americans recognize that story. Some 63% of Americans say they are living paycheck to paycheck, according to a July 2026 CNBC|SurveyMonkey poll. As Fortune has reported, even six-figure earners increasingly say the same.

Walt has stayed out of the spotlight. In an update on the GoFundMe page, he thanked donors and said the kindness shown to him and his family “meant more than I can put into words.” He added that he’s been keeping things private to protect his family, and that while being in the spotlight “isn’t something I would normally seek out,” he is considering sharing his story.

For now, the total keeps climbing.
