‘Highlighter Chic’ as a Way of Life

‘Highlighter Chic’ as a Way of Life

“I’ve always been drawn to color — it’s just kind of taken over my wardrobe,” said Cora Chalaby, whose bright orange coat contrasted sharply with the green foliage of Regent’s Park in London. “I would describe my style as highlighter chic.”

Both Chalaby and her husband, Matija Franklin, were on their way to visit the Frieze London art fair when I spotted their shades of poppy, which — on a pleasant Saturday in October — stood out among the dapper guests lining up for the event. Chalaby, an associate art lecturer at University College London, was completely colorful from her head to the Clarks Wallabees on her feet. Franklin, who researches ethics in artificial intelligence, took a more muted approach by offsetting a gray suit that he had recently found in a secondhand shop in Notting Hill with a silk scarf riotously patterned with parakeets. “It’s almost something that I would happily put on a wall in a frame,” he said.

On his wrist was a vintage Cartier watch that he inherited from his grandmother, who moved from the former Yugoslavia to London in the 1960s to work as a journalist. “We have these amazing photographs of Jimi Hendrix back home that she took,” he said, adding that the ’60s were a major inspiration for his personal style.

The couple, both 30, met in a library while studying at Cambridge University. They described their home as being as colorful and “bright as possible,” saying that their apartment felt “like a rainbow inside.”

“I think color is the greatest source of joy in our lives,” Chalaby said. “I think that the more color that I wear, the more I could see people wearing, the more happiness there is.”
