‘I fell for it three times’: Furious Trump voters threaten to sink GOP in midterms

A slice of voters who helped put President Donald Trump back in the White House have turned on him, and some of them say Republicans will pay for it in November.

According to the Washington Post’s new reporting, about 1 in 5 registered voters who backed Trump in 2024, or 22 percent, now disapprove of the job he’s doing. That’s roughly 8 percent of the electorate, and they’re concentrated in the areas Trump carried and where the midterm fight is being waged.

Rick Sebring, 66, of rural Black Creek, Georgia, has backed Trump since 2015. He now jokes with his kids that he needs a hat that reads, “I fell for it three times.”

Trump is “not the same guy he was before,” Sebring told the Post. He likened the betrayal he feels to finding out a spouse is cheating.

Sebring said he is furious about Trump’s war against Iran, which broke the president’s pledge to avoid new conflicts in the Middle East. He said Trump should tell Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to “go to hell” and “cut off all aid” to Israel and Ukraine. He’s also bothered that Trump tried to block the release of the Epstein files.

He has voted for exactly one Democrat in his life, former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman in 1998. He said “that is going to change in November,” when he plans to vote for Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.).

Carrie Bacon, a 73-year-old retired nurse in Belfast, Maine, now calls Trump “the bozo that’s currently in the White House.” She said he’s “after his own aggrandizement and making as much money on the side as he can.” She’ll vote for Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) but not for former Gov. Paul LePage, the Republican running in her congressional district.

The bigger threat to the GOP may be voters who simply stay home. According to the poll, 76 percent of Trump voters who still approve of him are certain to vote or already have, but only 53 percent of those who now disapprove say the same.

Russell Clements, 61, of Gloucester, Virginia, voted for Trump three times. He soured on him over the Iran war and isn’t sure he’ll vote at all.

Jill Vandermolen, a 56-year-old teacher in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, may also sit this one out. “Everything costs more money,” she said, adding that she does “not have faith in him at all.”

Not every disillusioned voter is ready to abandon the party. Amy Reese, 42, of Victoria, Virginia, said she has “never seen the economy this bad, ever, and it’s scary.” Her family’s electric bill hit almost $700 last month, and her insulin costs have more than doubled. Trump’s promised $5,000 checks “aren’t enough,” she said. Even so, she said she “will never vote for a Democrat,” mainly because she opposes abortion.

Dana Bessen, 76, of Highland, Michigan, disapproves of nearly everything Trump has done in his second term but will still vote Republican.

“They’re not Trump,” he said.

Trump’s approval among registered voters has fallen to 33 percent in the latest Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll, down from 39 percent in February.
