The dangers that journalists face

Veteran Post photographer Heidi Levine was attacked by a group of Israeli extremists in the West Bank on Friday as they assaulted Palestinian villagers picking olives, our Post colleagues report. Levine received medical care and is recuperating, we are pleased to learn, but the episode is a reminder of the extraordinary dangers that many journalists face around the world as they simply try to do their jobs.

Amid the recent street violence in France, according to Reporters Without Borders, at least 12 journalists were “physically attacked or verbally intimidated by police, demonstrators or other actors while covering the protests by high school and university students.” The injured included Patrick Wack, a freelance photographer for the Wall Street Journal, who required stitches after being struck in the head by a flashball round fired by police at close range as he covered a protest in Paris.

Now consider this sobering tally from the Committee to Protect Journalists: 130 journalists and media workers killed in 2025 and, as of last December, 340 imprisoned and 85 missing.

UNESCO maintains an Observatory of Killed Journalists, with a map covering the period from June 2, 1993, to Oct. 2 of this year. The death toll of 1,876 is staggering, as is the array of countries where journalists lost their lives; among the places with grim prominence across that span are Iraq, Mexico, the Philippines, Somalia and Syria.

War correspondents occupy a special category of bravery in the reporting field. They routinely go to work knowing death can come at any time, yet they are willing to take that risk in the service of presenting the world with an accurate portrait of conflict unfiltered by combatants.

But many journalists outside war zones also regularly put their personal safety on the line, whether covering riots, government corruption, drug cartels, terrorist organizations or any of the countless pockets of society around the world where someone with a reporter’s notepad or a microphone or a camera is not welcome.

We look forward to learning the results of the Israeli police’s promised investigation into Friday’s attack and wish Heidi Levine a swift recovery.
