Artificial-intelligence-generated advertisements are proliferating like never before this midterm cycle. In Texas’s Senate race, Republican Ken Paxton has shared a spot that features James Talarico, his Democratic opponent, reading extreme left-wing views from a Bible. In New York, Republican candidate Bruce Blakeman has distributed one in which Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul is robbing taxpayers. Both are obviously fabricated, but neither of the candidates depicted is amused. They aren’t alone. Thirty-one states have banned or regulated the use of AI “deepfakes” in campaign ads. Sens. Josh Hawley (R-Missouri) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota), among others, have sponsored a similar federal effort.
