President Donald Trump on Wednesday publicly embraced a proposal to create a Camp David-style presidential retreat at his West Palm Beach golf club, saying it would be “a great idea.”
Asked in the Oval Office about a proposal to designate Trump International Golf Club as a presidential retreat, Trump said military and Secret Service officials had raised the idea and called his club ideal because of its proximity to an airport, lack of nearby homes and security features.
When a reporter asked whether it would be called Camp Donald, the president said it already had a name: Trump International.
“It’s about as safe as they could possibly get,” Trump told reporters Wednesday. “It’s only about two minutes away from the airport … and they could spend the weekend there, like a retreat, like a sort of Camp David retreat. They asked if I’d be willing to do it, and I said I would be. This wouldn’t be for me. This would be for all future presidents.”
Trump’s comments came after The Washington Post reported new details on an effort to create a presidential retreat at the club.
The Secret Service didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about Trump’s remarks. In 2024, an assassination attempt was thwarted at the property while Trump was golfing there.
An attorney for Trump International Golf Club, which is owned by Trump’s company, first brought the proposal to the Palm Beach county commission last month, requesting that local officials consider providing a parcel of county-owned land to the federal government for a presidential retreat.
