In the debate spin room Tuesday afternoon, Republican candidate for Maryland governor Dan Cox disavowed remarks purportedly made by his adult son calling Jewish people pedophiles, “scum who killed my savior Jesus” and claiming they worshiped at a “Synagogue of Satan.”
The comments attributed to Cox’s son were posted in a public Facebook forum by a Republican consultant who described them as private messages between her and Josiah Cox, who once worked on his father’s campaigns. The post, reported by the Jewish Insider on Monday, is now deleted and could not be independently confirmed by The Washington Post. Josiah Cox did not respond to messages left by The Post.
But Cox addressed them directly Tuesday after his debate with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore. Asked whether he agreed with his son, Cox said, “I absolutely do not. I called him up and expressed my sincere upsetness about it and to his credit, he apologized.”
Cox blamed Democrats for planting an unflattering story about his family.
In a conversation with The Post, the Republican operative who posted the exchange, Alexandra Levine, called it “a nothingburger story” and said she received an apology.
“Mr. Cox is now the Republican nominee, and we move on,” she said.
