Dave Grohl had a message for Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) on Saturday night, and he delivered it with his shirt.
The Foo Fighters frontman took the stage at the Power to the People Festival in Maryland wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes T-shirt. Music site Consequence called the shirt a “not-so-subtle reference” to Schmitt’s botched attempt to accuse former special counsel Jack Smith of perjury earlier in the week. Smith was in the crowd.
Grohl then dedicated “My Hero” to “my new friend Jack,” Consequence reported.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday, Schmitt accused Smith of lying about whether he attended an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024. Schmitt’s staff held up text messages that he said proved Smith was there. “I think you’ve already perjured yourself,” Schmitt told him.
It later came out that Smith hadn’t been at a Hawks game at all. He had been watching Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Consequence tagged Schmitt directly when it posted a photo of Grohl’s shirt on X.
Photos of Smith at the festival, which was organized by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, spread quickly on social media. In them, Smith is holding a beer and wearing a black Bruce Springsteen “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour shirt that reads “No Kings.” Springsteen was also on the lineup.
Fans said people were high-fiving Smith and lining up for selfies. Several posted photos of themselves with him.
