President Donald Trump went after former special counsel Jack Smith on Sunday, a day after photos of Smith at a Maryland music festival spread across social media.
“Deranged Jack Smith is a Crooked Prosecutor!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
His post linked to a Just the News story headlined “Ex-Special Counsel Jack Smith sports Springsteen ‘No Kings’ shirt at ‘Power to the People Fest.’”
Smith went to the festival on Saturday. It was organized by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, and Bruce Springsteen was on the lineup. Photos showed Smith holding a beer and wearing a black Springsteen “Land of Hope and Dreams” tour shirt that read “No Kings,” the slogan of the nationwide protests against Trump.
Fans said people were high-fiving Smith and lining up for selfies.
Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl also seemed to acknowledge him from the stage. Grohl wore an Iowa Hawkeyes T-shirt during his set, which the music site Consequence called a “not-so-subtle reference” to Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.). He then dedicated “My Hero” to “my new friend Jack.”
The shirt was a jab at Schmitt’s failed attempt at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Tuesday to accuse Smith of perjury. Schmitt claimed Smith lied about attending an Atlanta Hawks game in February 2024 and held up text messages he said proved it. “I think you’ve already perjured yourself,” Schmitt said.
It later came out that Smith had actually been watching Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Smith led multiple federal investigations into Trump, including one over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and one over his handling of classified documents. Those two cases were dropped after Trump won the 2024 election.
