CNN’s Harry Enten dismissed a boast by President Donald Trump that he would win a presidential race by 25 points if he ran today.
Trump made the claim on the campaign trail as he prepares to rally for Republicans in deep-red states, where several races have tightened unexpectedly. Although the 22nd Amendment bars him from seeking a third term, Enten pointed to polls showing that a 2024 do-over would go the other way.
“Maybe on planet Krypton,” Enten told CNN anchor Sara Sidner. “But in the reality world in which we live in here on planet Earth… it’s just not real.”
Trump beat Kamala Harris by about a point in 2024, but Enten said pollsters have asked voters how they would vote if they had the chance again. A University of Massachusetts Amherst survey taken at the end of August found Harris winning by 6 points, and an NBC News poll earlier this year put her ahead by 8 points.
“This looks like regret here,” Sidner said.
“Yes,” Enten agreed. “Voters, they have a regret or two. The regret has grown since the beginning of Trump’s presidency.”
Enten said independents are driving the shift. In October 2024, they backed Trump by 2 points, but in the UMass Amherst do-over, independents chose Harris by 18 points – a 20-point swing.
“Independents, they definitely have regrets,” he said.
According to Enten, the regret reflects voters’ dislike of how Trump is doing his job. Trump’s net approval rating has been negative in every poll since March 29, 2025, a streak of 553 straight days.
“I remember when this was less than a year, and now we are approaching nearly two years in time and there is no sign whatsoever that President Trump’s numbers are going in the positive direction,” Enten said.
Sidner noted that while Trump can’t run again, the numbers may show how voters feel about the Republicans who back him.
“Exactly right,” Enten said, adding that Trump’s endorsement is a net negative for GOP candidates in poll after poll. “No wonder that Trump is spending his time in red states and not actually in the swing states of the 2024 election cycle.”
