After Mayoral Loss, Andrew Cuomo Buys $10 Million Hamptons Home

New Yorkers have not seen much of former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo since his drubbing in last year’s mayoral contest.

But life seems to still be treating him well.

Over the summer, he bought a seven-acre compound on the South Shore of Long Island for nearly $10 million, according to two people told of the transaction who insisted on anonymity to discuss a private transaction.

The property is referred to in a listing as “resort-like,” with a nine-bedroom, nine-and-a-half-bathroom main home that was once a 19th-century hunting lodge. In addition to a four-bedroom guesthouse, there is a saltwater pool, a tennis court and 234 feet of waterfront with “docks, a sandy beach and a boathouse.”

The listing also boasts of a five-car garage with a “commercial-grade hydraulic car lift” where Mr. Cuomo might store his fleet of vintage muscle cars, including a sky-blue 1975 Corvette.

The property in Remsenburg, an enclave in the Town of Southampton, was originally listed for sale in 2025 for $11.9 million. A real estate listing database shows that the transaction closed on June 23, 2026 — almost exactly a year after the mayoral primary. The buyer, an L.L.C. linked to Mr. Cuomo, paid $9.6 million in cash.

The buyer did not use a Realtor. Lauren Spiegel, the agent representing the seller, declined to comment, as did a representative for the seller.

Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for Mr. Cuomo, confirmed the purchase and said that the former governor intends to sell the empty lots on the property and use the home as a summer residence. He added that the former governor also maintains an apartment in New York City.

Since losing the election to Zohran Mamdani last November, Mr. Cuomo has sought to stay in the public eye, regularly appearing on radio and television and weighing in on issues in the public discourse, all of which has fueled speculation that he might consider running for office again. Though he has not publicly closed off the possibility, the multimillion-dollar purchase suggests that Mr. Cuomo, 68, may be entering a new chapter of his career and life.

After resigning as governor in 2021 over sexual misconduct allegations that he continues to deny, Mr. Cuomo spent several years in the political wilderness before embarking on his run for mayor last year. Though Mr. Mamdani, a democratic socialist half Mr. Cuomo’s age, won the Democratic primary, the former governor stayed in the race as an independent, and it soon became a one-on-one contest that hinged on the two men’s very different visions of the city.

Mr. Cuomo’s exact living arrangements since losing the election have been a mystery to his friends and political allies.

During the campaign, where Mr. Cuomo lived and how he made his money were heavily scrutinized by his opponents and the press. The former governor, who had moved to the city only a year before entering the race, paid around $8,000 in monthly rent for a market-rate apartment on Manhattan’s Upper East Side formerly occupied by his daughter, while attacking Mr. Mamdani for living in a rent-stabilized apartment in Queens.

Soon after leaving the governorship, Mr. Cuomo created a private consulting firm, Innovation Strategies, and signed a lucrative podcast contract. The podcast sputtered but his consulting work appeared to grow steadily, with his clients including Nano Nuclear Energy and OKX, an offshore cryptocurrency exchange that he has been advising intermittently since 2023.

Over the summer, Mr. Cuomo became the co-chair of a partnership between OKX and the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange. OKX also announced in July that Mr. Cuomo had joined its board of directors.

During the election, the Cuomo campaign said he had stopped his private work to run for office, but repeatedly refused to share a list of clients that had paid him for consulting services. As the race neared its end, The New York Times reported that he earned nearly $5 million working as a private consultant in 2024. Nearly all of his income, $4,712,978, came from Innovation Strategies, a pass-through company created for his consulting work.

Debra Kamin contributed reporting.
