Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park in Valencia, California, will permanently close its popular X2 roller coaster as it faces lawsuits from customers who allege they experienced brain damage from the ride.
Magic Mountain Park President Brian Oerding said Tuesday the ride had carried more than 16 million people since it opened in 2008.
“While X2 consistently passed a multitude of safety tests, we have decided to close the ride because we believe it’s the right thing to do,” he said. “When we see guest confidence affected, we take it seriously.”
Three people have filed lawsuits against the company, a law firm representing the riders said, adding that more than 100 people had also contacted the firm alleging they had experienced traumatic brain injuries from the ride.
The roller coaster has been closed since July, when two women needed emergency brain surgery after taking the ride.
In August, Six Flags settled a wrongful-death lawsuit after a 22-year-old man died after riding the roller coaster in 2022.
