Fox Business host Larry Kudlow, former director of the National Economic Council during President Donald Trump’s first term, was shut down on his own show Wednesday after brushing off concerns about surging diesel prices during a rosy take on the economy.
Kudlow, a regular panelist on “The Big Money Show,” was boasting that inflation was better than media reports had suggested before pivoting to a prediction: that the Iranian government could be on the verge of collapse.
“Will Iran literally dissolve in the next few weeks because they are utterly bankrupt?” Kudlow asked. “They cannot trade externally or internally, and their pal China is not helping them.”
Fox Business’ Dagen McDowell interjected to point out a crucial flaw in Kudlow’s bullish outlook.
“Diesel though,” McDowell said.
“Sorry?” Kudlow replied.
“Diesel prices, though,” McDowell said. “They feed through to goods and services of all shapes and sizes.”
McDowell warned that the costs would show up in higher consumer prices “in the coming months if Iran is not resolved.”
Kudlow waved off the concern as “a ‘what if,’” prompting McDowell to shoot back after a brief silence.
“It’s not. With diesel at a record high, that’s gonna happen,” she said. “The ‘what if’ is ‘how much.’”
Kudlow pushed back again, arguing that the real question was how long the war would last, calling diesel “a refining problem, first and foremost,” adding, “we have plenty of oil.”
“It’s still a consumer price problem, ultimately,” McDowell replied.
Kudlow, visibly flustered, retreated to his Iran prediction.
“Well, we’ll see,” he said. “I’m just saying, if the — if Iran dissolves, a lot of things change. I think all… uh… what I’m hearing is that a lot of ships are getting through [the Strait of Hormuz] right now.”
