Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s leadership PAC released a list of new endorsements Monday. One name was left off: James Talarico.
Crockett’s fundraising venture, FIRE PAC, has been supporting downballot candidates for state legislative office and county judges in Texas this year and added 14 names Monday. The group has also backed a small handful of congressional and gubernatorial candidates in California and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
But it has not backed Talarico, the state’s Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate. Talarico and Crockett competed in a bitter primary this year where Crockett alleged racism contributed to her defeat, saying she was held to a higher standard as a Black woman. The day after the primary, she said she would support the Democratic ticket but has not taken an active role in campaigning for Talarico.
Sen. John Cornyn (R), who lost his primary to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, has also declined to actively campaign for his party’s nominee. Cornyn and his allies spent more than $90 million in the primary, with Cornyn calling Paxton corrupt and unfit for office.
Talarico and other Texas Democrats have tried to tamp down talk of lingering tensions with Crockett. Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder defended Crockett last month, saying she is bringing attention to downballot candidates who may otherwise go unnoticed.
“Y’all need to get off Congresswoman Crockett’s case,” Scudder said. “We love Congresswoman Crockett. She’s a great member of the team.”
