An Uber driver was killed early Thursday morning after crashing into a food truck along the eastbound 10 Freeway in Los Angeles’ Mid-City area, authorities said.
The collision happened around 2:15 a.m. near the Arlington Avenue off-ramp, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters found a car, which was actively operating for Uber, had slammed into a food truck that, according to KTLA’s Mike Case, was possibly parked at the time. The collision ignited a small fire, and the Uber driver, described as a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Case reported that the Uber passengers were initially reported to have gotten out of the vehicle safely. A 32-year-old passenger was taken to a hospital in fair condition, officials said.
Video from Sky5 showed the heavily damaged car against the rear of the burnt catering truck near the Arlington Avenue exit.
California Highway Patrol officers shut down several eastbound lanes for hours as investigators and the L.A. County coroner worked at the scene, KTLA’s Ginger Chan reported. Only the two left lanes were open during the morning rush hour, causing significant delays in both directions. A third lane was opened around 8 a.m., but the Arlington off-ramp remained closed.
Authorities have not released the identity of the driver. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
