A decommissioned boiler tower at a power plant in Ulsan, South Korea, collapsed on Thursday afternoon, the authorities said, trapping workers who were trying to demolish it under the rubble.

By early evening, firefighters had pulled out two of the victims and located another in the rubble. Six others were believed to be buried still. None of the victims’ conditions were clear.

The boiler tower was part of the Ulsan Thermal Power Plant and was being demolished when the accident occurred around 2 p.m., fire officials said. It was nearly 200 feet high, had been decommissioned for several years and was being dismantled with explosives, according to local news media.

The power plant is operated by the state-run utility Korea East-West Power Co., according to the Ulsan City government. The original plant was built in 1973 as part of efforts to make Ulsan, which lies on South Korea’s southeast coast, a manufacturing and industrial hub. The utility declined to comment.

Jin Yu Young reports on South Korea, the Asia Pacific region and global breaking news from Seoul.
