A Russian drone was seized by police after it was found atop a parked sedan in a residential area of Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Kyiv Police Communications Department issued a statement explaining that, on Tuesday, law enforcement officers discovered a social media post indicating that “a car with an enemy UAV attached to its roof” was found in a residential complex in the nation’s capital.
Investigators with the local police and explosive department immediately went to the scene and located the drone, later found to be a Shahed unmanned aerial vehicle with a depleted warhead. Shahed UAVs are made in Iran and have been used by Russia in their war against Ukraine.
The depleted warhead meant the UAV “[did] not pose a threat to the life and safety of citizens,” Kyiv police said.
Officials were able to track down the owner of the white Lexus the drone was sitting on; he was identified as a 30-year-old man who serves as the head of an unnamed public organization. The man told authorities he was planning to donate the drone to a museum.
Local law enforcement officials indicated that the investigation into the alarming discovery is ongoing.
“The police seized the drone for additional inspection, and all the circumstances of the incident are being established,” Kyiv Police Communications Department spokesperson Victoria Kovalska said.
