A crew member was killed on the set of a New Orleans production on Monday, Deadline has confirmed.

The victim is believed to be James “Trapper” McEvoy, a grip who was also a member of IATSE Local 478. While details are scarce, he is suspected to have died by electrocution.

Several friends spoke of McEvoy’s death in social media posts on Monday evening, one of whom said that he was killed in “a tragic accident while working on set.”

In the comments of that post, Deven Schruff, a NOLA locations manager whose recent credits include Sinners and Your Honor, also confirmed that McEvoy had died.

“Heartbreaking, I have been so saddened by this news all day,” Schruff wrote. “Hugs love and light to all of my film brothers and sisters. Praying for comfort for his family and all who loved our sweet Trapper.”

In a statement to Deadline, IATSE affirmed that a crew member had died but did not disclose details about the victim, the accident, or the production on which it occurred.

“Today we grieve the loss of one of our fellow members who was killed in a tragic incident on a production shooting in Louisiana,” IATSE International President Matt Loeb said in a statement. “Our deepest condolences are with the family who lost a loved one, and the crew who lost a friend and colleague. All workers have a right to safety on the job. We have engaged the Entertainment Community Fund to provide counseling for crew members, and are sending an IATSE representative to Louisiana to support the members and Local Unions on the ground there.”

Deadline has reached out to IATSE Local 478 as well as the local film office and the coroner’s office. This post will be updated as more details are available.
