FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) – An Oath of Office Ceremony is being held on Monday for the new mayor and city council members in Florence.

Ron Tyler is taking over as mayor after beating a crowded field of candidates in August.

The former Florence police chief replaces Andy Betterton, who opted against running for re-election and instead ran an unsuccessful bid for city council.

The new city council will be comprised of Kaytrina Simmons (District 1), Jackie Hendrix (District 2), Alisa Dickson (District 3), Josh Bowling (District 4), Thomas Spence (District 5), and Chapel King (District 6).

Simmons and Hendrix were re-elected. Dickson beat out two others including Betterton for the District 3 seat. Bowling defeated incumbent Michelle Eubanks in District 4.

Spence won the District 5 race after the previous councilman, Blake Edwards, did not run again.

King topped incumbent Jimmy Oliver in the District 6 race.

The mayor and city council members each serve four year terms.

The ceremony is being held at 10 a.m. in the City Auditorium.

News 19 Shoals bureau reporter Whitney Leibold is covering the ceremony and will have more on our evening newscasts.
