Toronto Blue Jays closing pitcher Jeff Hoffman is in despair over the team’s World Series loss to the Dodgers on Saturday, and he is blaming himself.
Hoffman says the Game 7, 5-4 loss is all his fault after he gave up a homer to Miguel Rojas with one out in the top of the ninth, tying the game and giving the Dodgers a chance to clinch it all in extra innings.
With that tying run, the game went four more innings and ended, giving the Dodgers the first repeat championship in 25 years.
Hoffman let his feelings out on Sunday when he was asked about the loss. After being asked how he was taking the defeat, he replied, “I cost everybody in here a World Series ring, so it’s pretty shitty,” according to the New York Post.
“Hoffman replaced phenom Trey Yesavage with two outs in the top of the eighth, looking to get a four-out save,” the paper added.
But instead of earning that save, the Dodgers’ Rojas evened the score.
“I’ve just got to execute better in that spot and not let that happen,” Hoffman admitted.
Sadly for Toronto, right up to the ninth inning, the Blue Jays seemed to be in a good place.
The Jays held the Dodgers to three games each in the series, and going into Game 7, they were ahead until Rojas rounded the bases for the Dodgers. In fact, the Jays quickly scored three runs in the first inning and held the Dodgers off until that fateful ninth inning. With the score still tied by the ninth inning, the game went into extra innings, and the Dodgers finally rallied and put themselves up one run in the eleventh inning.
