Officers responded to a call about a shooting on Saturday around 9 p.m. near 37th Street and McDowell Road, the Phoenix Police Department said.
When they arrived, 58-year-old William Baumgardner was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
Paramedics took Baumgardner to a nearby hospital where he later died.
Police said that preliminary information suggests that Gibson and Baumgardner were verbally arguing in the apartment and when Baumgardner confronted Gibson the disagreement escalated, and Gibson pulled out a firearm and shot his stepfather.
