New York City Marathon 2025 results: Who were the winners?

They put their best foot forward.

Kenyan runners dominated the 2025 New York City Marathon on Sunday, with Benson Kipruto claiming the men’s race and Hellen Obiri setting a record in the the women’s event.

Kipruto, 34, crossed the finish line at 2:08:09, nearly losing first place at the final second with fellow Kenyan Alexander Mutiso Munyao hot on his heels.

Obiri, 35, set a new course record, surging to victory with a time of of 2:19:51, marking her second TCS NYC Marathon victory.

Sunday’s event marks the 54th running of the race, which starts in Staten Island, weaves into Brooklyn and Queens, touches the southern tip of The Bronx, and ends in Manhattan’s Central Park.

The massive event began with the men’s wheelchair race, with Switzerland’s Marcel Hug reclaiming the championship after his three-year winning streak was broken last year.

“It’s so overwhelming to win here in New York,” Hug told TV reporters following the grueling race. “It’s really nice to be back on the podium. It’s great. “

The subsequent women’s wheelchair race saw American Susannah Scaroni winning for the second year in a row, and her third overall at the NYC marathon.

The winner of the 2023 New York City marathon, Ethiopian runner Tamirat Tola, finished with the quickest time in the race’s history – at 2 hours, 4 minutes and 58 seconds.

Kenyan runner Margaret Okayo previously held the record for the women’s event, competing the marathon on Nov. 2, 2003 at 2 hours, 22 minutes and 31 seconds.

Many roads across the five boroughs will remain closed as the rest of the runners continue making their way to the finish line, with the race expected to conclude at around 4 p.m.

Starting in 1970, the NYC marathon began with only 55 finishers who only ran in Central Park.

Now the race has swollen to more than 55,000 contestants from all over the world, with millions tuning in on TV and thousands cheering in the streets.
