NEW YORK (WPIX) — Fifteen to 20 passengers were injured on a JetBlue flight heading to Newark, New Jersey. The flight was diverted in Florida due to a control issue experienced by the flight crew, according to officials.
The flight took off from Cancún, Mexico, and made an emergency descent.
“JetBlue Airlines Flight 1230 diverted to Tampa International Airport around 2:00 p.m. local time on Oct. 30 after the crew experienced a flight control issue,” a spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration said. “The Airbus 320 left Cancun International Airport and was headed to Newark Liberty International Airport. “
The plane took off, reaching an altitude of 35,000 feet, and maintained that altitude for about 30 minutes before descending to Tampa International Airport, according to information from FlightAware.
“JetBlue 1230 descending to 10,000, we’re leveling 297,” said the pilot of the flight, in audio obtained from the air traffic control transmission. “We need medical equipment; we have at least three people injured, maybe a laceration in the head.”
The affected passengers suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Tampa Fire Rescue spokesperson.
The FAA is still investigating, officials said.
The flight was met by medical personnel who evaluated the customers and crew members upon landing. Some were transported to local hospitals for further care.
The plane has been taken out of service for inspection, and we will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause, JetBlue officials told Nexstar’s WPIX.
