President Donald Trump had a late dinner Sunday night with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, after Trump spent weeks dismissing Amodei’s calls for the industry to slow down AI development.
The dinner was the first one-on-one meeting between the president and the head of Anthropic, one of the country’s leading AI firms, after months of tensions between the company and the administration. Trump has pursued policies to accelerate AI development, while Anthropic has called for greater caution and guardrails.
Amodei is one of the only major tech CEOs who has not sought time with the president in his second term, unlike others who attended his inauguration, made investment announcements at the White House and regularly dined with Trump. The White House did not immediately release any information about what the two men discussed.
The administration and Anthropic clashed this year with Pentagon officials over the company’s effort to limit how the military could use its Claude technology.
At the time, Trump called Anthropic’s leaders “Leftwing nut jobs,” and the Pentagon blacklisted the firm.
Trump is expected to attend an event in Washington with other top tech executives Tuesday.
