GERALDINE, Ala. (WHNT) — The Geraldine Bulldogs’ region championship win over Fyffe marked the program’s first region championship since 2018, earning them the team of the week.
The Bulldogs are off to a great 8-1 start on the year and are looking to close out the regular season with a win against Douglas.
Quarterback Jon Beck Wade says his teammates and coach Michael Davis’ game plan are a huge reason why the team came out with the 17-6 win.
“Definitely my o-line and d-line we shut, we had a gameplan for defense, and our d-line shut Gipson down, and he couldn’t do much,” Beck Wade said. “My o-line was getting movement. I think I had over 200 yards, they said, and that’s the most I’ve ever had, so I definitely think my o-line contributed to that win.”
“We played very physical, very disciplined, we tackled well, blocked really well, and held on to the football and didn’t turn it over. Things like that, the little small things that add up, we did really, really well, I thought as a whole,” Coach Michael Davis said. ” You know there’s things we didn’t do well, but we did the things we needed to in order to win.”
The win marked the first region championship for Geraldine since 2018.
“It felt great, we definitely earned it, and we worked really hard for it, and we deserve it,” Beck Wade said. “First one in seven years I think, and it’s just really good to have that title.”
“Our kids worked extremely hard to accomplish that,” Davis said. “It was really good, it was really good for our kids and our community.”
As the Bulldogs prepare to close out the regular season, the team feels like a special run could be in store for them in the playoffs.
“I think we can make a run for sure, that’s always our goal is to win state. That’s definitely the end goal this year,” Beck Wade said. “But, we just got to take it week by week and just take it one game at a time.”
