KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The University of Tennessee’s retired mascot, Smokey X, has been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture announced the 14-year-old bluetick coonhound’s diagnosis on Wednesday. During Smokey X‘s recent biannual appointment, veterinary staff discovered a small mass on his kidney. Diagnostic sampling of the mass determined the mass was a renal carcinoma.
Even during his CT scan, the institute shared that Smokey X demonstrated his unwavering loyalty to the Vols.
“As he emerged from anesthesia to the notes of ‘Rocky Top,’ Smokey rose to his feet, a testament to his indomitable spirit and love for the Volunteers,” according to a statement from the UT Institute of Agriculture.
Smokey X was examined by the oncology service at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine to determine the best palliative care plan that will provide him with pain relief and comfort through the rest of his days.
“While it is difficult to predict exactly how much time he has, the goal is to help him enjoy each day with the best quality of life. At home, Smokey X continues to enjoy his time interacting with his two boys, including Smokey XI, and munching on his favorite salmon treats,” the UT Institute of Agriculture wrote.
Smokey X made his debut as a mascot for the Vols during the 2013 season. His tenure saw the bluetick coonhound becoming Tennessee’s state dog, Butch Jones’ tenure as coach, and Josh Dobbs’ rise as the Vols quarterback starting from his freshman year. Smokey X retired in 2023, passing the mantel of Vols mascot on to his son, Smokey XI.
The UT Institute of Agriculture added that fans can share their memories of Smokey X and messages of support here.
