FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Florence City School Superintendent Dr. Jimmy Shaw, Jr. has announced plans to retire.

Shaw recently announced plans to step down effective Jan. 1, 2026, in a letter to parents.

The superintendent said that Florence has always been his home since he was a child, but after much prayer, reflection and gratitude, he has decided it’s time to retire.

You can read Shaw’s full message here:

“Falcon Family,

“After much prayer, reflection, and gratitude, I have announced my retirement as Superintendent of Florence City Schools, effective January 1, 2026.

“Florence has been my home since childhood. Florence is where I was educated, raised my family, and spent my professional life serving this community that I love. Leading our schools for the past nine years has been a true blessing.

“I am thankful for the trust you’ve placed in me, for your supporting me in supporting our students, faculty, and staff. Tomorrow…Today truly defines Florence. We have strived for many years to give our students their successes of tomorrow while we have them today. Be it W.C. Handy, or FAFA, or Launch, or Dual Enrollment, or any of the other life changing programs we have. None of them top the people that we have that have made this happen. We, as a community, have built this. Together, we’ve built something special, and I know that the best is yet to come. The next chapter will be great. The next leader will leave it better than they found it because they have the support of a community like Florence.

With deepest respect, gratitude, and a Go Falcons,”

Dr. Jimmy Shaw, Jr., Florence City Schools Superintendent
