MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — A Mobile couple on their honeymoon in Jamaica is stranded as Hurricane Melissa approaches.
Destinie Orso-Lowrey and Taylor Lowrey tied the knot on Oct. 18 before heading to the island for their honeymoon.
Destinie’s sister, Brianna Orso, says the whole family just wants them to make it back home safe.
“My family, we’re just asking for prayers,” said Orso. “I know the storm is big, but my God is even bigger.”
She says the couple had been having an amazing time, sharing photos and updates until things suddenly changed.
“They don’t know if they’re going to be able to make it home,” Orso explains.
The family started hearing about Hurricane Melissa three days ago. On Monday, they found out the storm was strengthening near the island.
“I think we all just kind of went into it like a shock,” she said. “About the time that we found out, all the airports were already closing, and there was, like, no way for her to make it out.”
Orso says her sister has been sending updates whenever she can, but communication may not last long as conditions worsen.
Despite this, the couple has remained calm throughout the situation.
“Last time I talked to her was last night, and they were in very high spirits,” Orso said. “They said if they make it home, and that they have a honeymoon baby, that they will name her Melissa after the hurricane,” she continued.
Orso said the last the family heard from the couple, they had moved to a sturdier building on the island.
All the family can do now is hope and pray.
