A man was sentenced to 32 years in prison for an “execution-style” shooting that left a man hospitalized in Ventura County.

Gabriel Torres, 21, of Port Hueneme, was convicted of attempted murder in connection with a 2022 shooting, according to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.

On Dec. 23, 2022, Torres drove to the victim’s Oxnard home, walked into a nearby alleyway where the victim was and fired six rounds from a handgun at close range. The victim was struck three times before Torres eventually fled the scene, prosecutors said.

Surveillance footage captured a partial license plate and a male figure that matched Torres’ description at the scene. Following an investigation, on Dec. 31, 2022, Oxnard police spotted a car that matched the one in the surveillance video and attempted to pull the driver over, but Torres refused to yield.

He drove off and led authorities on a pursuit. During the chase, Torres threw a 9mm pistol out of the window. He was eventually taken into custody. The firearm was recovered and, through forensic analysis, was confirmed to be the weapon Torres used in the deadly shooting.

An analysis of Torres’ cell phone location data also placed him at the crime scene on the day of the shooting, court documents said.

On July 31, 2025, Torres was found guilty by a jury of attempted murder. He was 18 years old at the time of the shooting. The Ventura County DA described the incident as an “execution-style attack carried out in broad daylight with complete disregard for human life and public safety.”

On Oct. 28, 2025, Torres was sentenced to 32 years in prison for attempted murder. The special allegations found true include:

  • Personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury
  • Great bodily injury in the commission of a felony
  • The crime involved great violence
  • The defendant was armed with and used a weapon
  • The defendant has engaged in violent conduct that indicates a serious danger to society

The victim was hospitalized for two weeks while recovering from his injuries. No further details, including his identity or a motive behind the shooting, were released by the DA’s office.

“The defendant’s violent conduct with the use of a gun is deserving of a lengthy prison sentence,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney Lisa Lyytikainen. “The comprehensive investigation by our law enforcement partners, along with our aggressive prosecution, reflect our commitment to hold violent offenders accountable in Ventura County.”
