WASHINGTON — Americans are generally supportive of President Trump’s deportation policies and strongly believe that all illegal immigrants should be kicked out of the country, a new poll exclusively shared with The Post reveals.
And Democrats are even on board with one aspect of Trump’s deportation plans, according to the poll from JL Partners, a DC-based firm.
A whopping 69% somewhat or strongly support deporting illegal immigrants who broke other laws, compared to a paltry 13% who somewhat or strongly oppose that policy. Nineteen percent were unsure or didn’t have a strong opinion.
Even among Democrats, 58% want criminal illegal immigrants to get booted from the country, compared to 20% opposed.
“Opinion pieces by liberal writers, the public statements of Democrats, the views opined on social media — they could not be further from where the median American is on immigration,” James Johnson, co-founder of J.L. Partners, told The Post.
By a near-2-to-1 margin, 50% of registered voters want all illegal immigrants residing in the US to be deported, while only 27% somewhat or strongly oppose that policy,
Moreover, half of the respondents say Trump’s policies are about right (32%) or don’t go far enough (18%), while 28% said they go too far and 12% were unsure.
“This poll definitively shows that the American public are on the side of President Trump on migration policy and deportations,” Johnson added. “Quite apart from having gone ‘too far’, a majority of the public think the administration’s policy is about right or even hasn’t gone far enough.”
While Republicans (76%) and Independents (49%) were very supportive of deporting all illegal immigrants, more Democrats were against that policy (45%) compared to 29% in favor.
Registered voters were even more emphatic on deportation when it comes to illegal immigrants who have committed crimes.
Trump has made mass deportation and border security a top priority of his second term and it has generally polled as one of his strongest issues.
The president has a net 1.4 percentage point negative approval rating on immigration, according to the latest RealClearPolitics aggregate of polls.
That’s a higher mark than his standing on foreign policy, inflation, the economy, and handling of the Russia-Ukraine war, according to RCP.
Part of Trump’s deportation policy includes the expulsion of illegal immigrants to third countries — nations other than their country of origin, often with limited notice. That’s because, in some instances, the home countries of illegal immigrants weren’t accepting them or deemed safe enough.
Over the summer, the Supreme Court gave the Trump administration the go-ahead to resume deportations to third countries.
Registered voters backed that policy 37% to 30%.
The Trump administration has faced heavy pushback from lefty protesters against its immigration policies and deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to cities across the country.
Many of those agents have faced threats from protesters and even bounties from transnational criminal gangs.
A firm 56% of voters said that violence against ICE officers can’t be justified, compared to 25% who said it can and 19% who were unsure, according to the poll.
The JL Partners poll sampled 1,004 registered voters from Oct. 14–15 with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
