UPDATED, 8:49 a.m.: “My father is really good director, but he’s a very difficult person,” says Renate Reinsve in the new trailer for Joachim Trier‘s Neon pic Sentimental Value. “We can’t really talk.”
In the film co-starring Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, which won the Grand Prix this year at Cannes, Stellan Skarsgård plays that father, Gustav, a charismatic, once-renowned director seeking reconciliation with his estranged daughters, played by Reinsve and Lilleaas. PREVIOUS, JULY 1: Neon has unveiled the first trailer for Sentimental Value, its family drama reteaming The Worst Person in the World‘s Joachim Trier and Renate Reinsve, which wowed at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is slated to open in limited release on November 7.
In the film, co-starring Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning, and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, which garnered a 19-minute standing ovation, as well as the Grand Prix this year at Cannes, sisters Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Lilleaas) reunite with their estranged father, the charismatic Gustav (Skarsgård), a once-renowned director who offers stage actress Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. When Nora turns it down, she soon discovers he has given her part to an eager young Hollywood star (Fanning). Suddenly, the two sisters must navigate their complicated relationship with their father — and deal with an American star dropped right into the middle of their complex family dynamics.
In his review out of Cannes, Deadline’s Pete Hammond said, “Sentimental Value is a film that sneaks up on you, more meditative than maybe expected but also one that will not leave your mind so easily. The conclusion also turns out to be one of more satisfying endings I have seen in some time, perfectly pitched and worth the wait for its human truth, and value that stops just short of sentimental.”
Trier directed from his script written with frequent collaborator Eskil Vogt, with Maria Ekerhovd and Andrea Berensten Ottmar producing.
For Neon, the next film up for release is body horror flick Together (July 30) starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. Other upcoming titles include the swinger comedy Splitsville (August 22), BlackBerry helmer Matt Johnson’s Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie (September 12), Chris Stuckmann’s horror film Shelby Oaks (October 3), Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or winner It Was Just an Accident (October 15), and the horror film Keeper from Longlegs and The Monkey helmer Osgood Perkins.
