Newly obtained video appears to show the suspect in a deadly hit-and-run in Santa Monica that killed two people and injured two others fleeing the scene on foot.
The Oct. 24 crash occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Wilshire Boulevard between 14th and Euclid streets.
Preliminary information from the Santa Monica Police Department indicates that the driver of an Orange Dodge Charger, for unknown reasons, was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes of Wilshire and had at times even maneuvered onto the sidewalk before plowing into the four people.
“I look to the right, and I see the orange car going as fast as it can,” an unidentified witness said. “It looked like, flooring it, the gas pedal to the metal. I was thinking it was going to hit us.”
Surveillance footage from Harvest Cannabis captured shows the vehicle veering onto the sidewalk at a high rate of speed moments before the deadly collision.
It was first reported that, in the wake of the crash, only one person was killed; however, an SMPD later confirmed that a second person had died. Both were said to have succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The victims were only identified as a man and a woman in their 60’s.
Of the two hurt victims, one was initially listed as being in “possibly critical condition,” while the other’s condition was not immediately known. A media statement issued by SMPD Saturday morning indicates they are both expected to survive.
Following the collision, the driver was said to have fled the area on foot, leaving the mangled Dodge Charger on the sidewalk against a tree.
New surveillance footage shows a man, described only as about 6 feet tall who was wearing a red hat, a black hat and black shoes, running away from the scene.
Tyler Patton, who works nearby, is hopeful the man responsible is caught and held accountable.
“Where are your morals or your humanity, you know what I mean? In times like these, we really should be sticking together, but to do something like that and to flee the scene without taking accountability is disgusting,” she said.
While investigators in Santa Monica do not believe the crash was intentional, they are investigating the incident as a felony hit-and-run. The case remains under investigation, but so far, no arrests have been made.
